ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research (ICAR-DPR) is actively implementing the DAPSC programme in Cuddalore district, Tamil Nadu. On 14 March 2025 scientists of the Directorate visited Mullangudi and Ottarapalayam villages, Komaratchi block, Cuddalore district and identified 200 SC families in the villages for the implementation of the scheme. At a meeting organized at Mullangudi village the beneficiaries from two villages were briefed about the DAPSC scheme of ICAR-DPR and the contribution made by ICAR-DPR in developing backyard chicken varieties like Vanaraja, Gramapriya, Srinidhi etc. A brief on scientific rearing of chicken under backyard was provided to the beneficiaries. Brooding management, nutrition and health aspects were covered. The negative impact of protein and micronutrient deficiencies on health and welfare of marginalised communities were explained and highlighted the importance of consuming egg and meat for improving nutritional status and immunity. To properly safeguard chicken during night from predatory attacks 200 night shelters were distributed to 200 SC families. Dr. A. Kannan and Dr. M. Shanmugam, scientists of the directorate attended the programme. The programme was attended by Panchayat representatives and office bearers of the villages.
