Visit of Shri CH. Vidyasagar Rao, Former Governor of Maharashtra to ICAR–DPR, Hyderabad
Shri CH. Vidyasagar Rao, Former Governor of Maharashtra, visited the ICAR–Directorate of Poultry Research (ICAR–DPR), Hyderabad, on 9th February 2026 and interacted with the scientists of the institute. Shri V. Devender, Former Member of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC), accompanied him during the visit.
Dr. R. N. Chatterjee, Director, ICAR–DPR, welcomed the dignitaries and briefed them on the major achievements and ongoing research activities of the Directorate. Shri CH. Vidyasagar Rao highlighted the importance of involving rural and marginal farmers in backyard poultry production to enhance livelihood opportunities and meet local egg requirements. He also emphasized the potential role of Anganwadi centres in promoting nutritional security through increased egg production and consumption.
Shri CH. Vidyasagar Rao and the accompanying dignitaries visited the Integrated Moringa and Chicken Unit, Aseel native chicken unit, and the Waste-to-Wealth Unit, where vermicompost is produced from poultry litter. He appreciated the efforts of the institute in promoting sustainable and integrated poultry farming practices.

Input Distribution Programme Conducted for SC Families at Kadambanadu Village, Pathanamthitta District, Kerala
An Input Distribution Programme under the DAPSC scheme was organized on 27 January 2026 at Kadambanadu village, Parakode block, Pathanamthitta district, Kerala, for the benefit of Scheduled Caste (SC) families to promote backyard poultry farming. Dr. A. Kannan and Dr. M. Shanmugam, Principal Scientists, participated in the programme and sensitized the beneficiaries on scientific methods of backyard poultry rearing, feeding strategies, brooding management, and effective health-care practices. The scientists also highlighted the nutritional importance of regular consumption of eggs and chicken meat in improving nutritional security and enhancing immunity among rural households. As part of the programme, each beneficiary was provided with 20 grown-up birds, 10 kg feed, one night shelter, one feeder, and one drinker. A total of 2,000 grown-up birds, 1,000 kg feed, 100 night shelters, 100 feeders, and 100 drinkers were distributed to 100 SC beneficiaries. Dr. A. J. Biji, Senior Veterinary Surgeon, Veterinary Hospital, Mannady, along with local panchayat officials, participated in the programme.

Input Distribution Programme at Kodumon Village, Kerala
ICAR–Directorate of Poultry Research organized an input distribution programme under the DAPSC scheme on 27 January 2026 at Kodumon village, Kerala, for the benefit of Scheduled Caste (SC) families. Under the programme, each beneficiary was provided with 20 grown-up birds, 10 kg feed, one feeder, and one drinker. Night shelters had already been provided to these SC beneficiaries during the previous year. A total of 2,000 grown-up birds, 1,000 kg feed, 100 feeders, and 100 drinkers were distributed to 100 SC beneficiaries. Dr. A. Kannan and Dr. M. Shanmugam, Principal Scientists, participated in the programme. Dr. Anitha, Senior Veterinary Surgeon, Veterinary Hospital, Kodumon, and local panchayat officials were present.

Input Distribution Programme for SC Families at Enathymangalam and Kalanjoor Villages, Pathanamthitta District, Kerala
ICAR–DPR organized two input distribution programmes under the DAPSC scheme on 28 January 2026 at Enathymangalam and Kalanjoor villages of Parakode block, Pathanamthitta district, Kerala, for the benefit of Scheduled Caste (SC) families. Under the programme, each beneficiary was provided with 20 grown-up birds, 10 kg feed, one night shelter, one feeder, and one drinker. A total of 50 SC beneficiaries each from Enathymangalam and Kalanjoor villages were supported to initiate backyard poultry farming. In total, 2,000 grown-up birds, 1,000 kg feed, 100 night shelters, 100 feeders, and 100 drinkers were distributed to 100 SC beneficiaries during the programme. Dr. A. Kannan and Dr. M. Shanmugam, Principal Scientists, participated in the programme. Dr. Neelima, Veterinary Surgeon, Veterinary Dispensary, Elamanoor, Dr. Susan Isaac, Senior Veterinary Surgeon, Veterinary Hospital, Kalanjoor, and local panchayat officials participated.

The Annual Review Meeting of the AICRP on Poultry Breeding for the year 2024–25 was organized by ICAR-DPR at the ICAR Research Complex for North Eastern Hill Region, Umiam, Meghalaya, during 27–28 January 2026. Dr. Raghavendra Bhatta, DDG (AS), ICAR, evaluated the performance of the participating centres and suggested measures for further improvement. The Principal Investigators presented the progress of their respective centres, which was critically reviewed by the DDG (AS) and experts. Constructive suggestions were provided to strengthen research outcomes and enhance centre performance. The meeting was graced by Dr. G.K. Gaur, ADG (AP&B), ICAR; Dr. R.N. Chatterjee, Director, ICAR-DPR, Hyderabad; Dr. S. Hazarika, Director, ICAR RC NEH, Umiam; Dr. U. Rajkumar, Head and In-charge, AICRP on Poultry Breeding; and Dr. H.K. Narula, Pr. Scientist, AS Division, ICAR. Centre In-charges from 24 AICRP on Poultry Breeding centres representing different states across the country actively participated in the review meeting.

Input Distribution Programme Conducted for SC Families at Thandarai Puducherry and Vedanthangal villages in Chengalpattu District, TamilNadu on 12th January, 2026
The Directorate organized two Input Distribution Programmes under the DAPSC scheme on 12 January 2026 at Thandarai Puducherry and Vedanthangal villages, Maduranthakam Taluk, Chengalpattu District, Tamil Nadu, for the benefit of Scheduled Caste (SC) families. Dr. A. Kannan and Dr. M. Shanmugam, Principal Scientists, along with Shri Asif Mohammed, Finance and Accounts Officer of the Institute, participated in the programme and sensitized the beneficiaries on scientific methods of backyard poultry rearing, with special emphasis on practical feeding strategies, brooding, and effective health-care management. They also highlighted the nutritional value of regular consumption of eggs and chicken meat in enhancing nutritional security and strengthening immunity among rural households. As part of the programme, temporary night shelters were distributed to 100 identified SC families, with 50 beneficiaries each from Thandarai Puducherry and Vedanthangal villages, to support and promote backyard poultry rearing activities. Panchayat officials and village elders actively participated in the event and appreciated the effects of the Directorate.

Input Distribution Programme Conducted for SC Families in Cuddalore District, TamilNadu on 11th January, 2026
The Directorate organized an Input Distribution Programme under the DAPSC scheme on 11 January 2026 at Karuppur village, Komaratchi Block, Cuddalore District, Tamil Nadu, for the benefit of Scheduled Caste (SC) families. Dr. A. Kannan and Dr. M. Shanmugam, Principal Scientists of the Institute, participated in the programme and created awareness on scientific backyard poultry rearing practices. The programme focused on practical aspects of feeding, housing, and healthcare management of backyard poultry. The scientists also emphasized the nutritional significance of regular consumption of eggs and chicken meat for enhancing nutritional security and immunity among rural households.
As part of the programme, 150 temporary night shelters were distributed to 150 identified SC families to support and promote backyard poultry rearing activities. The programme witnessed active participation from panchayat officials and village elders, reflecting strong community involvement. The input distribution programme was coordinated by Dr. M. Shanmugam.

Awareness Training and Input Distribution on Backyard Duck Farming for Tribal Farmers under TSP at Kandhamal
An awareness training programme on backyard duck farming was conducted under the DAPST/TSP programme of ICAR–AICRP on Poultry Breeding by the Regional Station, ICAR–DPR, Bhubaneswar, at KVK, Kandhamal, G. Udayagiri, Odisha on 07-01-2026, with the participation of 50 tribal farmers. Dr. Narayan Bar, Head, KVK, graced the occasion. Dr. B. K. Swain, Principal Scientist and Co-PI, AICRP on Poultry Breeding, delivered a talk on feeding and feed formulation of ducks, while Dr. M. K. Padhi, Principal Scientist and PI, AICRP on Poultry Breeding, coordinated the programme and explained duck breeds and scientific management practices. During the programme, ducklings were distributed to all 50 farmers, and 15 kg of duck starter feed was provided to each participant.

Kudu duck has been registered as an indigenous Duck breed of India
Kudu duck of Odisha has been registered as an indigenous duck breed of India by ICAR–NBAGR. The native tract of this breed is Mayurbhanj district of Odisha. Kudu ducks are characterized by light brown mosaic-patterned plumage, a distinct white ring around the neck, and orange-coloured beak, shank, and feet.
The breed is reared for both egg and meat production. As a good layer, Kudu ducks produce an average of 149 eggs per year, with a relatively large egg size averaging 64 g. The adult body weight is about 1.3 kg in males and 1.2 kg in females. The estimated population of Kudu ducks is around 64,000.
The breed has been registered under the accession number INDIA_DUCK_1500_KUDU_11006. This registration was accomplished by ICAR–DPR Regional Station, Bhubaneshwar in collaboration with the Animal Husbandry Department, Odisha.

Celebration of Farmers’ Day and Training-cum-Input Distribution Programme for SC Families at Kalaburagi under DAPSC (23-12-2025)
On the occasion of Farmers’ Day, 23 December 2025, Scientists from the Directorate, in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Kalaburagi, organized the Celebration of Farmers’ Day along with a Training-cum-Input Distribution Programme under the Development Action Plan for Scheduled Castes (DAPSC). The programme was conducted at KVK, Kalaburagi for 100 identified Scheduled Caste (SC) families from Suntanoor and Vaijapur villages of Aland Taluk, Kalaburagi district. The programme commenced with a training session on scientific rearing of backyard poultry, wherein beneficiaries were provided with practical guidance on proper feeding practices and health care management. Scientists also sensitized the participants to the importance of regular consumption of animal protein, particularly chicken eggs and meat, for improving nutritional status and strengthening immunity among rural households. At the conclusion of the programme, 100 temporary night shelters were distributed to 100 identified SC families, comprising 99 women beneficiaries and one male beneficiary, to support sustainable backyard poultry rearing. The programme was attended by Dr. Yousufali, Senior Scientist, and Dr. Srinivas, Scientist, KVK Kalaburagi, along with village elders from both villages. Scientists from the Directorate, namely Dr. A. Kannan, Principal Scientist; Dr. Vijaykumar, Senior Scientist; and Shri Asif Mohammed, FAO, also participated in the programme.

Under the Development Action Plan for Scheduled Castes (DAPSC), a Training-cum-Input Distribution Programme was organized on 22 December 2025 at Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Kalaburagi, for the Scheduled Caste (SC) families of V.K. Salegar village, Kamalapur Taluk, Kalaburagi district. The programme was implemented by the Directorate in collaboration with KVK, Kalaburagi. The 3-days Annual Indian Poultry Science Association Conference (IPSACON- 2025) Concluded in Hyderabad: Focus on Technology, Innovation, Entrepreneurship, Sustainability for Protein Security in Viksit Bharat
The three-days 40th Annual Conference and National Symposium of the Indian Poultry Science Association (IPSA) concluded on 11th December at the University Auditorium of Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University (PJTSAU), Rajendranagar, Hyderabad. The theme of the conference was “Flock to the Future: Embracing Technology, Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Sustainability in Poultry Production for Protein Security in Viksit Bharat.”
The event was jointly organized by the ICAR–Directorate of Poultry Research (ICAR-DPR), Hyderabad and the Indian Poultry Science Association (IPSA). More than 400 delegates, including scientists, academicians, industry professionals, policymakers, and students from across the country participated, and discussions were held on different issues of the poultry sector.
Eminent academician Dr. K. C. Veeranna, Vice Chancellor, KVAFSU, Bidar, Karnataka and senior policy maker Dr K. Ilambarithi, IAS, Secretary, AHDDF, Government of Telangana were set the tone of the conference on 9th December 2025 during the inauguration, and they underlined the crucial role of the poultry sector in ensuring nutritional security and strengthening the rural economy. They also emphasized the critical aspects of the poultry value chain of the country for achieving protein sufficiency goals under Viksit Bharat 2047 


Keynote addresses were delivered by Dr. Tarun Shridhar, IAS (Retd.), Former Secretary, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Government of India, and Dr. D. V. R. Prakash Rao, President, NAVS(I) and Chairman & Managing Director, Prakash Foods & Feed Mills Pvt. Ltd., Chennai.
During the three days of detailed discussions, the following major actionable points emerged: adoption of detailed phenotyping traits and genomic selection using indigenous populations for sustainability and lifetime productivity; integration of molecular and traditional breeding; strengthening of backyard and rural poultry; innovation in nutrition and feed resources, especially alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters, alternate feeding strategies, and climate resilience; detailed study of disease dynamics and vaccination needs under a One Health approach; biosecurity and AMR mitigation; post-harvest innovation and export readiness with a special focus on establishing a National Centre for Poultry Product Innovation and making Indian poultry products globally competitive; technology-driven production systems; capacity building and stakeholder engagement by strengthening farmer training, technician skills, and industry–academia partnerships; strengthening rural poultry through training and support; and promoting rural and country chicken production as a sustainable alternativand Support and promoting Rural and Country Chicken Production as a Sustainable Alternative.


IPSA also honored prestigious Lifetime Achievement Awards to Dr. V. Ayyagari, Former Director, ICAR-DPR and Dr. V. K. Saxena, Former ADG, ICAR. The Society conferred IPSA Fellow Recognitions to Dr. Soloman Rajkumar, Senior Scientist, ICAR-CCARI, Goa; Dr. R. Amutha, Professor & Head, TANUVAS; Dr. Chandra Deo, Head, Avian Nutrition & Feed Technology, ICAR-CARI, Bareilly; Dr. Ramesh Chandra Hazary, Venco Research & Breeding Farm, Venkateshwara Hatcheries Group. Students and faculties were also awarded for their best presentation during the different technical sessions.


Dr M Gnana Prakash, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, PVNRTU, Hyderabad stressed the enabling ecosystem of Indian poultry sector and collective efforts to address the challenges during concluding session of the conference. Dr. P. K. Shukla, President, IPSA and Dr. R. N. Chatterjee, Director, ICAR-DPR, emphasized the significance of research institutions in driving growth, resilience and sustainability in the poultry sector. Dr. U. Rajkumar, Organizing Secretary of the conference, appreciated all the eminent personalities and delegates for their valuable inputs during the conference.
By adopting holistic strategy integrating technology, entrepreneurship, One Health, waste-to-wealth models, sustainable feed, and farmer-centric innovations Indian poultry sector can be resilient and globally competitive to meet the protein security under the Vision for Viksit Bharat 2047.

Regional station, ICAR-DPR, Bhubaneswar successfully organized a five-day online training program on “Profitable Duck Farming Practices” from 17 to 21 November 2025. A total of fifteen participants representing eleven different states took part in the virtual training. During the concluding session, Dr. R. N. Chatterjee, Director, ICAR-DPR, Hyderabad, addressed the trainees and encouraged them to establish duck-rearing units in their respective regions. Dr. S. K. Bhanja, Head of the Regional Station, assured the participants of providing quality germplasm and technical guidance to support the establishment of duck units. He also committed to organizing such training programs at regular intervals. Participants expressed their satisfaction with the program and recommended conducting more advanced and specialized training sessions on duck farming. The program was coordinated by Dr. S. C. Giri, Dr. Dhirendra Kumar, and Dr. Rajalaxmi, while scientists from the Regional Station delivered lectures covering various aspects of duck rearing.

Live Telecast of Launch of PM Dhan-Dhanya Krishi Yojana at ICAR-DPR and AICRP Centres
The ICAR–Directorate of Poultry Research, Hyderabad, organized the live telecast of the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s address during the launch of the PM Dhan-Dhanya Krishi Yojana, Pulses Self-Reliance Mission, and the inauguration and foundation stone laying of more than 2100 projects under Agriculture Infrastructure Fund, Animal Husbandry, and Fisheries Sectors, held at Pusa, New Delhi. The programme was organized at the ICAR-DPR, Hyderabad, its Regional Centre, Bhubaneswar, and at various AICRP on Poultry Breeding Centres across the country.
The programme began with a welcome address and an overview of the objectives and highlights of the day’s event. This was followed by informative sessions on improved packages of practices for major Rabi crops, emphasizing climate-resilient and high-yielding varieties. Detailed discussions were also held on natural farming, focusing on eco-friendly and sustainable cultivation techniques.
Farmers keenly listened to the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s address, wherein he highlighted the Government’s continuous efforts to strengthen the agricultural sector through various schemes and initiatives. The Prime Minister emphasized the significance of the Pradhan Mantri Dhan-Dhanya Yojana (PMDDY), designed to enhance digital access, transparency, and efficiency in agricultural operations. He stated that the scheme aims to benefit around 1.7 crore farmers across 100 districts by improving irrigation facilities, storage infrastructure, and credit access. The focus on post-harvest management, crop diversification, and sustainable farming is expected to enhance farmers’ income and reduce rural distress.
As part of the event, a demonstration on Moringa integration with poultry farming was conducted, showcasing its potential for income diversification and nutritional enhancement. Awareness sessions were also held on oilseed crop cultivation practices, National Programme on Soil Health and Fertility (NPSS), and the benefits of GST reduction on agricultural inputs. The event concluded with an interactive session, where farmers shared their experiences and expressed appreciation for the practical insights and policy updates that would contribute to improving their farm profitability and sustainability.
In total, 959 participants attended the programme, including 526 male and 433 female participants across ICAR-DPR Main, Regional Centre, and different AICRP-PB Centres. At the ICAR-DPR Main Centre, Hyderabad, 114 farmers (108 male and 6 female), 23 students, and 50 other participants attended; at the Regional Centre, Bhubaneswar, 65 participants (47 male and 18 female) participated; and the remaining participants joined from various AICRP-PB Centres across the country.

World Egg Day 2025 Celebrated on 10th October 2025
The ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research (ICAR-DPR), Hyderabad, celebrated World Egg Day 2025 on 10th October 2025, highlighting the theme “The Mighty Egg: Packed with Natural Nutrition”. The event was chaired by Dr. R. N. Chatterjee, Director, ICAR-DPR, and graced by Sri Kalidindi Govinda Raju, a prominent Commercial Layer Farmer from Hyderabad, as the Chief Guest. In his address, Dr. R. N. Chatterjee emphasized the importance of eggs as a powerhouse of nutrition, being rich in high-quality protein, essential vitamins, and minerals vital for growth and overall health. He highlighted that eggs are nature’s perfect food, supporting brain development, immunity, and well-being at every stage of life. The Chief Guest, Sri Kalidindi Govinda Raju, delivered an insightful talk on “Sustainable Egg Production in India: Prospects and Challenges,” focusing on optimizing resource use, enhancing bird welfare, and minimizing environmental impact to ensure sustainable poultry production. A key highlight of the celebration was a lecture by Dr. M. R. Reddy, Principal Scientist, ICAR-DPR, on “Biosecurity: A Tool for Poultry Farmers to Protect Animal Health and Wealth,” underscoring the vital role of biosecurity in safeguarding poultry health and farmer livelihoods. As part of the celebrations, Quiz and Debate Competitions were organized for students on 9th October 2025, promoting youth engagement and awareness about the nutritional significance of eggs. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from the staff and students of the Directorate. The programme was coordinated by Dr. Vijay Kumar and Dr. M. Monika.

The Directorate organized a training program on scientific poultry production and management for farmers from 16–18 September 2025. A total of 15 participants representing seven states attended and benefitted from the program. The event was inaugurated by Dr. R. N. Chatterjee, Director, ICAR-DPR. He emphasised the need to follow systematic poultry rearing for nutritional security, women empowerment and rural employment generation. Over three days, the program covered a wide range of topics including poultry management, housing, nutrition, health care, waste management, poultry welfare guidelines, hatchery management, integrated poultry farming, poultry economics, project formulation, and diversified poultry production. The training proved to be highly valuable, enabling farmers to gain a deeper understanding of the significance of scientific poultry practices for improving productivity and enhancing economic returns. A hands on training on poultry feed mixing was also conducted. A manual with all the topics covered in the lectures was prepared and distributed to the farmers for further learning and understanding. The training programme was coordinated by Dr. KS Rajaravindra and Dr SS Paul.

Training on Scientific Poultry Production and Management Organized at ICAR-DPR, Hyderabad
The ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research (ICAR-DPR), Hyderabad, organized a three-day Farmers’ Training Programme on “Scientific Poultry Production and Management” from 9th to 11th September 2025. A total of 29 participants from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, including farmers and aspiring entrepreneurs, actively took part in the programme. Dr. R.N. Chatterjee, Director, ICAR-DPR, inaugurated the programme and interacted with the participants. The programme featured a series of technical sessions covering diverse aspects of poultry production such as hatchery practices, rural poultry production, low-cost feed formulation, health management, vaccination, and biosecurity, integrated poultry farming with moringa, diversified poultry production systems and innovative approaches in poultry farming. In addition to sessions, the programme also included hands-on training in feed mixing along with exposure visits to farms and hatcheries, enabling participants to gain practical understanding and first-hand experience of the discussed concepts. Participants were also provided with reading materials, including leaflets, pamphlets, and a training manual, to reinforce the knowledge gained during the programme. The All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Poultry Breeding Centre was formally inaugurated on 23rd July 2025 at KVK-Leh, SKUAST-K, UT Ladakh. The ceremony was graced by Sh. Tashi Namgay Yakzee, Hon’ble Executive Councillor (Animal/Sheep), LAHDC Leh, as Chief Guest, and Dr. R. N. Chatterjee, Director, ICAR-DPR, Hyderabad, as Guest of Honour, along with other dignitaries and scientists from DIHAR, CAZRI, and SAS&T University of Ladakh.
Hon’ble Executive Councillor Sh. Tashi Namgay Yakzee appreciated ICAR for establishing the poultry project in Ladakh, highlighting its role in empowering rural women. He urged coordinated efforts among departments for farmer welfare and assured LAHDC’s support in providing poultry units, infrastructure, and fencing. He also emphasized the need for marketing and value addition to ensure sustainable poultry farming in the region.
Dr. R. N. Chatterjee, Director, ICAR-DPR, commended the Principal Investigator and team for introducing poultry farming in Ladakh’s challenging conditions. Citing Vanaraja’s success in Kashmir, he highlighted its potential in Ladakh and the centre’s scope to develop a location-specific poultry variety. He assured the supply of 50–100 Vanaraja chicks to interested farmers and urged LAHDC and related departments to ensure continued support for the centre’s success.
Dr. U. Rajkumar, Head and In-Charge, AICRP-PB, ICAR-DPR, narrated the history of the AICRP on poultry breeding. He described the Leh centre as a major milestone for Ladakh and emphasized backyard poultry as a key driver of women’s empowerment and rural development. Earlier, Dr. Feroz Din Sheikh, Head, KVK-Leh and Principal Investigator of the project, welcomed the gathering and highlighted the successful trial of Vanaraja chicks, which demonstrated promising results in egg and meat production. Around 56 farmers participated in the event and raised important concerns including shelter, feeding, and predator threats. Poultry inputs such as feed, mineral mixture, and grass cutters were distributed. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Prof. (Dr.) Sabiya Asmat of KVK-Leh.

ICAR-DPR Organized “Brainstorming Session On Technology Commercialization”

The ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research (ICAR-DPR), Hyderabad, organized a “Brainstorming Session on Technology Commercialization” on 24th June 2025. A major highlight of the event was an informative session on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) by Dr. Praveen Malik, CEO, Agrinnovate India Ltd. Dr. P. Malik delivered an engaging and insightful talk emphasizing the critical role of IPR in protecting innovations in agriculture. He elaborated on the various forms of intellectual property protection and their importance in enabling successful research commercialization. He encouraged scientists and stakeholders to actively utilize IP protection as a tool to promote innovation, gain due recognition, and ensure that research outcomes effectively benefit farmers. The session further explored the technology generation and commercialization cycle, covering the pathway from concept to commercial product. Key topics included factors affecting agri-tech transfer, technology overview, competitive landscape, market opportunities, and the technology transfer process followed by Agrinnovate (AgIn).
Dr. Malik also detailed the mechanisms of partnership development to facilitate collaboration between public research institutions and private industry. This interactive session served as a valuable platform for researchers to deepen their understanding of IPR and explore effective strategies for scaling up agricultural technologies to maximize their societal impact. Dr. S. S. Paul, Director (I/c), ICAR-DPR, chaired the session and emphasized the growing significance of intellectual property rights in agricultural research and innovation. He highlighted how strategic IP management is becoming increasingly vital for protecting novel technologies, enhancing institutional visibility, and enabling successful commercialization for the benefit of farmers and the agricultural sector at large.

ICAR-DPR Celebrates 11th International Day of Yoga – 2025
The ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research (ICAR-DPR), Hyderabad, enthusiastically celebrated the 11th International Day of Yoga on 21st June 2025. The event witnessed active participation from the staff members and students, highlighting the importance of yoga in promoting physical and mental well-being. A yoga session was conducted by Dr. A. Debnath, MBBS, Authorized Medical Attendant of the ICAR-DPR Clinic. He briefed the participants on the holistic benefits of yoga for both the body and mind and guided them through various Asanas and Pranayamas, which were practiced with great interest. Dr. R.N. Chatterjee, Director, ICAR-DPR, participated in the session and motivated the staff and students to incorporate yoga into their daily routine for a healthier and more balanced lifestyle. The ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research (ICAR-DPR), Hyderabad celebrated World Intellectual Property Day on 29th April 2025 with an informative session on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and the signing of a key Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support farmer development. Mr. Subhajit Saha, Head – Legal & IPR, Resolute Group of Companies and Resolute4IP, delivered an engaging talk highlighting the importance of IPR in protecting innovations in agriculture. He also explained the various forms of intellectual property protection.
Dr. R. N. Chatterjee, Director, ICAR-DPR, chaired the session and spoke about the growing relevance of intellectual property in agricultural research. He encouraged scientists and stakeholders to use IP protection to promote innovation, gain recognition, and ensure that research outcomes benefit farmers effectively. To mark the occasion, ICAR-DPR signed an MoU with Dasohi Poultry Farmer Producer Company Ltd. (DPFPCL), Bijapur, Karnataka. This collaboration will focus on joint research initiatives and capacity-building programs, particularly in backyard poultry farming, aimed at enhancing the skills of DPFPCL personnel. About 75 participants, including staff and students from ICAR-DPR and the College of Veterinary Science, Hyderabad, actively took part in the program. Staff from the Regional Station, Bhubaneswar, also joined the program virtually. The event was coordinated by Dr. M. R. Reddy, Principal Scientist and Incharge, ITMU.

ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research (ICAR-DPR) is actively implementing the DAPSC programme in Cuddalore district, Tamil Nadu. On 14 March 2025 scientists of the Directorate visited Mullangudi and Ottarapalayam villages, Komaratchi block, Cuddalore district and identified 200 SC families in the villages for the implementation of the scheme. At a meeting organized at Mullangudi village the beneficiaries from two villages were briefed about the DAPSC scheme of ICAR-DPR and the contribution made by ICAR-DPR in developing backyard chicken varieties like Vanaraja, Gramapriya, Srinidhi etc. A brief on scientific rearing of chicken under backyard was provided to the beneficiaries. Brooding management, nutrition and health aspects were covered. The negative impact of protein and micronutrient deficiencies on health and welfare of marginalised communities were explained and highlighted the importance of consuming egg and meat for improving nutritional status and immunity. To properly safeguard chicken during night from predatory attacks 200 night shelters were distributed to 200 SC families. Dr. A. Kannan and Dr. M. Shanmugam, scientists of the directorate attended the programme. The programme was attended by Panchayat representatives and office bearers of the villages.

The ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research (DPR), Hyderabad, in collaboration with the Department of Animal Husbandry, Kerala, organized two input distribution programmes at Pallickal and Kodumon villages in Parakode Block, Pathanamthitta district, under the Development Action Plan for Scheduled Castes (DAPSC) programme.
On 11-3-2025 at the Veterinary Hospital, Kodumon an input distribution programme was organized for distribution of 100 temporary night shelters to a total of 100 SC beneficiaries. The participants at the village was briefed about the DPR, Hyderabad, and the DAPSC programme. The beneficiaries were also explained about backyard chicken rearing and importance of night shelters for protecting the birds from predators and adverse climatic conditions. The distribution programme was attended by Dr Harikumar, Deputy Director, Animal Husbandry, Dr Swapna Paul, Senior Veterinary Surgeon and all the elected representatives of the Kodumon Panchayat. Dr. A. Kannan and Dr. M. Shanmugam Principal Scientists, from the Directorate coordinated the programme.
On 11th March, 2025, at the meeting organized at the Veterinary Hospital, Pallickal, 150 temporary night shelters were distributed to a total of 150 SC beneficiaries to enable them to start backyard poultry farming to improve livelihoods and nutritional security. The beneficiaries were explained about backyard chicken rearing. The next day, 20 grown up birds, 10 kg chicken feed, a drinker and feeder were distributed to each SC beneficiaries to start backyard poultry farming. A total of 3000 grown up birds, 150 feeders, 150 drinkers and 1500kg feed were distributed. The distribution programme was attended by Dr Harikumar, Deputy Director, Animal Husbandry, Dr Anita, Senior Veterinary Surgeon and all the elected representatives of the Pallickal Panchayat. Dr. A. Kannan and Dr. M. Shanmugam Principal Scientists, from the Directorate coordinated the programme.

The Directorate is implementing the DAPSC programme in Kalaburagi (Gulbarga) district, Karnataka in collaboration with Kalaburagi KVK (Gulbarga), Karnataka. As part of this initiative, an input distribution programme was organized on 6th March, 2025 at Kadaganchi village, Kalaburagi district. During the programme, 100 Scheduled Caste (SC) families were identified for the scheme. Scientists from the Directorate, in collaboration with Kalaburagi KVK, provided practical guidance on feeding and health care management of backyard poultry rearing. The importance of regular consumption of animal protein, particularly chicken eggs and meat, for improving nutritional status and immunity was also explained to the beneficiaries. At the end of the meeting, 100 temporary night shelters were distributed to the identified SC families (90 in Kadaganchi village and 10 in Alur village). The programme was coordinated by Dr. A. Kannan and M. Shanmugam, Principal Scientists from the Directorate. Dr. Srinivas, SMS, Kalaburagi KVK, and village elders were participated in the event.

A National Training Program on “A Hands-on Training on Genome Editing Using CRISPR Technology” was held at the ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research (ICAR-DPR), Hyderabad during 10-12, March 2025. A total of 11 participants from various states took part in the program, which was specifically organized for Scheduled Caste (SC) participants under the DAPSC (SCSP) component of the ICAR-Network Project on Genome Editing Technology for improvement in livestock health and production. The training covered both theoretical and practical aspects of genome editing using CRISPR technology. Dr. S S Paul, Head of the Division of PNH&P, shared his insights on the program and encouraged participants to apply the skills they had gained in their respective fields. The training program was coordinated by the Course Directors, Dr. Jayakumar S, Senior Scientist and Dr. S P Yadav, Principal Scientist of this Directorate.

A two-day training programme on “Differential diagnosis and control of oncogenic viral diseases of poultry” was held at the ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research (DPR), Hyderabad, during 6-7 March 2025. The training was sponsored by ICAR-All India Network Project on Challenging and Emerging Diseases of Animals (AINP-CEDA) and aimed at enhancing the skills of Scheduled Caste (SC) professionals working in ICAR Institutes, Agricultural Universities, and Colleges. A total of 11 participants from three states attended the programme. The training covered important topics such as the current status of virus-induced tumors in poultry, pathogenesis and diagnosis of Marek’s Disease (MD), Avian Leucosis Virus (ALV), and Reticuloendotheliosis Virus (REV). The participants also received training on the molecular detection and differentiation of MDV (pathotypes), ALV (subgroups), and REV, along with strategies to control these viral diseases. The programme was led by Dr. M. R. Reddy, Principal Scientist, as the Course Director, with Dr. T. R. Kannaki, Principal Scientist, and Dr. Vijay Kumar, Senior Scientist, serving as Course Coordinators. The ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research (ICAR-DPR), Hyderabad, celebrated its 38th Foundation Day with great enthusiasm today.
Dr. R.P. Sharma, Former Director, ICAR-DPR, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. In his address, he extended his congratulations and highlighted the institute’s rich history and significant contributions to the development of rural chicken varieties. He emphasized the importance of strengthening farmer training programs and ensuring the practical application of research to enhance rural livelihoods and nutritional security.
Presiding over the event, Dr. R.N. Chatterjee, Director, ICAR-DPR, reaffirmed the institute’s crucial role in advancing the poultry sector. He outlined its contributions to germplasm development for rural backyard poultry farming, the development of location-specific chicken varieties under AICRP and advancements in nutrition and health technologies. He also highlighted the recent introduction of academic programs at the directorate, with the admission of MVSc and PhD students in Poultry Science under the ICAR-IVRI Hub, Hyderabad. Additionally, he presented a roadmap for the future vision of the directorate. Dr. M.V.L.N. Raju, Principal Scientist, welcomed the dignitaries, while Dr. U. Rajkumar, Head of the Division of PG&B, delivered a presentation showcasing the directorate’s key achievements. Staff members and students actively participated in the celebrations. Paul, Head, Poultry Nutrition, Health and Physiology, ICAR-DPR, presented glimpses on the life and achievements of Dr. C.V. Raman, the renowned Nobel laureate. Dr. R.N. Chatterjee, Director, highlighted the significant contributions of Indian scientists across different fields and shed light on the recent achievements and innovations in Indian science. He further emphasized on bringing inclusivity and promoting resilience through scientific endeavors and laid stress on the importance of sharing scientific knowledge for the benefit of global masses. Golden Jubilee Celebrations of All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Poultry Breeding was held on 13th February 2025 at ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research (ICAR-DPR), Hyderabad. The event marked the 50 years of dedicated efforts directed towards genetic improvement in poultry breeding and development of rural chicken varieties, with a focus on fostering self-reliance in the backyard poultry sector. It has also significantly contributed towards improving rural livelihoods and enhancing nutritional security in the country.
Dr. R. N. Chatterjee, Director, ICAR-DPR, welcomed the dignitaries and provided an overview of the history of AICRP on Poultry Breeding, highlighting its achievements in developing and improving elite layer and broiler lines, creating location-specific rural chicken varieties, and characterizing and conserving indigenous chicken breeds.
Dr. Raghavendra Bhatta, Deputy Director General (Animal Science), ICAR, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and congratulated the staff of AICRP on Poultry Breeding for their relentless efforts in advancing poultry research and development. He emphasized the project’s role in enhancing the productivity of rural chicken varieties, benefitting farmers across India.
Dr. G. K. Gaur, Assistant Director General (Animal Production and Breeding), ICAR and Dr. S. B. Barbuddhe, Director, ICAR-NMRI, Hyderabad graced the function as Guests of honour. The event was attended by several eminent dignitaries, including Dr. R. P. Sharma, Former Director, ICAR-DPR; Dr. H. K. Narula, Principal Scientist, ICAR and former in charges of centres.
On this occasion, two chicken varieties, Janapriya, a dual-purpose rural chicken variety, and Aslibro, an alternative variety for native chicken farming, were released by Dr. Raghavendra Bhatta, Deputy Director General (Animal Science).
Dr. U. Rajkumar, In charge AICRP on Poultry Breeding, presented the glimpses of history, achievements of AICRP and its contribution to the development of poultry sector in the country.
Farmers from Karnataka, Bihar, and Nagaland shared their feedback on the benefits of the chicken germplasm received from AICRP centres, highlighting its positive impact on backyard poultry farming in their regions.
Principal Investigators (PIs) of various AICRP Centres, former PIs, farmers, officials from PVNRTVU and State Animal Husbandry departments, staff members, and students actively participated in the celebrations, making the event a grand success.

A short-term training program on “Applied Poultry Biotechnology: Bridging Theory and Practice” was organized at ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research from 3-7 February 2025. The program was organized for Scheduled caste participants sponsored under the SCSP component of the ICAR-Network Project on Genome Editing Technology for improvement in livestock health and production. Ten participants belonging to five state veterinary colleges and Universities attended the training. Both theory and practical including hands-on training were imparted to the participants in the areas of Nucleic acid isolation, PCR, RT-PCR, characterization of protein, bioinformatics tools, GWAS, NGS, transcriptomics, transgenesis, and genome editing in chicken. Dr.R.N. Chatterjee, Director, appreciated the participants’ interest in learning new insights into Biotechnology and encouraged them to apply for extramural research grants to fund their research. The training program was organized by the Course Directors, Dr. K.S. Rajaravindra, Senior Scientist and Dr. L. Leslie Leo Prince, Principal Scientist of this Directorate.

The ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research (ICAR-DPR) is actively implementing the DAPSC programme across various villages in Tamil Nadu. As part of this initiative, on January 29, 2025, a team of scientists from the Directorate visited Pazhayanur village (Maduranthakam block) and Villipakkam village (Chittamur block) in Chengalpattu district, identifying 50 Scheduled Caste (SC) families in each village as beneficiaries. Similarly, on January 30, 2025, the team visited Keezaparuthikudi village (Komaratchi block) in Cuddalore district and selected 100 SC families under the scheme.
During the visits, beneficiaries were introduced to the DAPSC scheme of ICAR-DPR and the organization’s contributions to the development of improved backyard chicken varieties such as Vanaraja, Gramapriya, Srinidhi, etc. Scientific knowledge on backyard poultry rearing, brooding management, nutrition, and health care was shared to the beneficiaries. The adverse effects of protein and micronutrient deficiencies on the health, emphasizing the importance of consuming eggs and meat to enhance nutritional status and boost immunity were explained.
To ensure the safety of poultry from predators and harsh weather conditions, 200 night shelters were distributed to the identified families across the three villages. Dr. A. ICAR-DPR organized an input distribution program under the DAPSC/SCSP program at Kondampet village, Kottapalle Mandal, Mancherial district, Telangana, on 16 January 2025. The event was held in collaboration with the Telangana State Animal Husbandry Department. Poultry night shelters (100 nos) were distributed to 100 Scheduled Caste (SC) families in the village. Dr. A. Kannan, Principal Scientist & Nodal Officer (DAPSC) highlighted the objectives of the DAPSC program, emphasizing its focus on improving the socio-economic status and nutritional security of SC families. He also emphasized the role of backyard poultry in promoting sustainable rural livelihoods. Dr. M. Shanmugam, Principal Scientist, elaborated on the significance of the distributed night shelters. He explained that these shelters are specifically designed to safeguard backyard poultry from predators and adverse weather conditions, thereby enhancing poultry survival and productivity. Dr. Aruna, Veterinary Assistant Surgeon (VAS), Kottapalle, expressed her gratitude to ICAR-DPR for supporting the SC families with night shelters. She encouraged the beneficiaries to adopt improved chicken varieties for better income generation. The beneficiaries expressed thanks to ICAR-DPR for the support and for imparting knowledge on scientific backyard poultry farming practices.

Distribution of night shelters to tribal farmers of Kalaburagi District, Karnataka
ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research, Hyderabad organised input distribution program at College of Veterinary Science Bidar, Karnataka on 08/01/2025 under the Scheduled Tribe Component (DAPSTC/TSP) to strengthen the rural/ backyard chicken farming intending to improve the nutritional and socio-economic status of tribal farmers. A total of 50 tribal families from Nagaidlayi, Empalli Bandarwad, Hire Bennur, Khanadal, Kumasi villages of Chincholi Taluka were given the training on Backyard Poultry Production and given the poultry night shelters.
Dr K.C. Veeranna, Honourable Vice Chancellor, KVAFSU graced the occasion as chief guest and distributed the 50 night shelters to the tribal farmers. He stressed the importance of backyard chicken and how its rearing helps in up keeping of the nutritional status of tribal community. Similarly, on 09/01/2025 at KVK, Kalaburagi, a total of 50 tribal families from V.K Salagar, Muddadaga, Suntanur, Munnolli, Salegaon, Khandal, Nirgudi, Shiroor J, Khed Umaraga villages were given the training on Backyard Poultry Production and given the poultry night shelters. Dr. SS Paul, Head, Division of PNHP explained about the benefits of backyard chicken rearing in uplifting the nutritional status of women and children in villages. Dr B Prakash, Pr Scientist explained about the objective and implementation of the TSP program. Dr Santosh H, Pr Scientist explained the role of backyard poultry in sustainable rural livelihoods. Dr Kotresh Prasad, Asst. Professor, College of Veterinary Science at Bidar, Karnataka coordinated the programs. On both days, about 120 tribal farmers were present during the programme.

ICAR-DPR organized an input distribution program under DAPST/ Tribal Sub Plan program at Sariya village, G. Madugula mandal, Alluri Seetharama Raju district, Andhra Pradesh, in collaboration with BCT-KVK, Visakhapatnam, on 4th January 2025. A total of 100 poultry night shelters were distributed to 100 tribal farmers, equally represented by 50 men and 50 women, from 15 villages. The participating villages included Krishnapalem, Goppulapalem, Pinakilthari, Nelametta, Sariya, Thokachilaka, Padamapuram, Bosupalli, Chintalalapadu, Bosupalli, Pedakilthari, Karyabanda, Gondimelaka, Junnula from Chintapalli and G Madugula mandals of Alluri Seethaaramaraaju District.
Dr.Shilaja, Program Coordinator, BCT-KVK welcomed the farmers and experts from DPR, Hyderabad and appreciated Directorate’s initiative in selecting Alluri Seetharama Raju district for implementing the TSP program. Dr. Vijaya Ragni, Subject Matter Specialist (Animal Science), provided an overview of various activities undertaken by KVK to improve tribal livelihoods in the district. Dr. MVLN Raju, Pr. Scientist, ICAR-DPR, highlighted the importance of the distributed shelters. He explained that these shelters are designed to protect backyard poultry from predators, diseases, and harsh climatic conditions, significantly reducing mortality rates and enhancing poultry production

Hon’ble Member of NCST Visits ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research
Sri Jatothu Hussain Nayak, Hon’ble Member of the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST), visited the ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research, Hyderabad, on 2nd January 2025, to review constitutional safeguards for Scheduled Tribes. During his visit, Hon’ble Member interacted with staff members belonging to Scheduled Tribes and informed them on the commission’s objectives. The Institute’s Director, Dr R N Chatterjee, presented an overview of the Directorate’s activities and achievements, highlighting the impact of the DAPST/TSP Program in Adilabad, an aspirational district, and its contribution to improving tribal livelihoods. Emphasizing the importance of inclusivity, the Hon’ble Member recommended expanding the number of beneficiaries under various outreach programs including DAPST. Appreciating the achievements and efforts of the Directorate, he assured full support for its development, particularly for initiatives benefiting Scheduled Tribe poultry farmers. The ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research (DPR), in collaboration with the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA), Utnoor, Adilabad, organized a one-day Research-Extension-Farmers Interface Meeting on 4th December 2024, at the Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA), Utnoor, Adilabad, Telangana. The meeting was attended by 136 backyard poultry farmers, predominantly women, along with officers from various line departments, extension officers, and other stakeholders. Farmers highlighted several challenges, including the unavailability of chicks, high feed costs, diseases such as fowl pox and cannibalism in adult birds, limited access to vaccines and veterinary support, lack of financial resources and space for proper poultry housing, predator attacks, and difficulties in marketing poultry products, especially eggs, at fair prices. Dr. M. R. Reddy, Principal Scientist, addressed health-related issues, while Dr. S. K. Bhanja, CTO, discussed management practices to tackle the challenges raised by the farmers. Dr. B. Prakash, Principal Scientist, emphasized the importance of nutrition and encouraged farmers to prepare poultry feed using locally available ingredients. Sri Sandeep Kumar, Horticulture Officer, suggested integrating poultry farming with moringa cultivation to enhance profitability. Sri Saianna, Project Director of DRDA, highlighted the role of social institutions in empowering women and promoting backyard poultry farming as a means of livelihood and nutritional security. The meeting was coordinated by Dr.Vijay Kumar, Senior Scientist, and concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. B. Prakash, ICAR-DPR, Hyderabad.
