ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research (ICAR-DPR) is actively implementing the DAPSC programme in Cuddalore district, Tamil Nadu. On 14 March 2025 scientists of the Directorate visited Mullangudi and Ottarapalayam villages, Komaratchi block, Cuddalore district and identified 200 SC families in the villages for the implementation of the scheme. At a meeting organized at Mullangudi village the beneficiaries from two villages were briefed about the DAPSC scheme of ICAR-DPR and the contribution made by ICAR-DPR in developing backyard chicken varieties like Vanaraja, Gramapriya, Srinidhi etc. A brief on scientific rearing of chicken under backyard was provided to the beneficiaries. Brooding management, nutrition and health aspects were covered. The negative impact of protein and micronutrient deficiencies on health and welfare of marginalised communities were explained and highlighted the importance of consuming egg and meat for improving nutritional status and immunity. To properly safeguard chicken during night from predatory attacks 200 night shelters were distributed to 200 SC families. Dr. A. Kannan and Dr. M. Shanmugam, scientists of the directorate attended the programme. The programme was attended by Panchayat representatives and office bearers of the villages.

The ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research (DPR), Hyderabad, in collaboration with the Department of Animal Husbandry, Kerala, organized two input distribution programmes at Pallickal and Kodumon villages in Parakode Block, Pathanamthitta district, under the Development Action Plan for Scheduled Castes (DAPSC) programme.
On 11-3-2025 at the Veterinary Hospital, Kodumon an input distribution programme was organized for distribution of 100 temporary night shelters to a total of 100 SC beneficiaries. The participants at the village was briefed about the DPR, Hyderabad, and the DAPSC programme. The beneficiaries were also explained about backyard chicken rearing and importance of night shelters for protecting the birds from predators and adverse climatic conditions. The distribution programme was attended by Dr Harikumar, Deputy Director, Animal Husbandry, Dr Swapna Paul, Senior Veterinary Surgeon and all the elected representatives of the Kodumon Panchayat. Dr. A. Kannan and Dr. M. Shanmugam Principal Scientists, from the Directorate coordinated the programme.
On 11th March, 2025, at the meeting organized at the Veterinary Hospital, Pallickal, 150 temporary night shelters were distributed to a total of 150 SC beneficiaries to enable them to start backyard poultry farming to improve livelihoods and nutritional security. The beneficiaries were explained about backyard chicken rearing. The next day, 20 grown up birds, 10 kg chicken feed, a drinker and feeder were distributed to each SC beneficiaries to start backyard poultry farming. A total of 3000 grown up birds, 150 feeders, 150 drinkers and 1500kg feed were distributed. The distribution programme was attended by Dr Harikumar, Deputy Director, Animal Husbandry, Dr Anita, Senior Veterinary Surgeon and all the elected representatives of the Pallickal Panchayat. Dr. A. Kannan and Dr. M. Shanmugam Principal Scientists, from the Directorate coordinated the programme.

The Directorate is implementing the DAPSC programme in Kalaburagi (Gulbarga) district, Karnataka in collaboration with Kalaburagi KVK (Gulbarga), Karnataka. As part of this initiative, an input distribution programme was organized on 6th March, 2025 at Kadaganchi village, Kalaburagi district. During the programme, 100 Scheduled Caste (SC) families were identified for the scheme. Scientists from the Directorate, in collaboration with Kalaburagi KVK, provided practical guidance on feeding and health care management of backyard poultry rearing. The importance of regular consumption of animal protein, particularly chicken eggs and meat, for improving nutritional status and immunity was also explained to the beneficiaries. At the end of the meeting, 100 temporary night shelters were distributed to the identified SC families (90 in Kadaganchi village and 10 in Alur village). The programme was coordinated by Dr. A. Kannan and M. Shanmugam, Principal Scientists from the Directorate. Dr. Srinivas, SMS, Kalaburagi KVK, and village elders were participated in the event.

A National Training Program on “A Hands-on Training on Genome Editing Using CRISPR Technology” was held at the ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research (ICAR-DPR), Hyderabad during 10-12, March 2025. A total of 11 participants from various states took part in the program, which was specifically organized for Scheduled Caste (SC) participants under the DAPSC (SCSP) component of the ICAR-Network Project on Genome Editing Technology for improvement in livestock health and production. The training covered both theoretical and practical aspects of genome editing using CRISPR technology. Dr. S S Paul, Head of the Division of PNH&P, shared his insights on the program and encouraged participants to apply the skills they had gained in their respective fields. The training program was coordinated by the Course Directors, Dr. Jayakumar S, Senior Scientist and Dr. S P Yadav, Principal Scientist of this Directorate.

A two-day training programme on “Differential diagnosis and control of oncogenic viral diseases of poultry” was held at the ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research (DPR), Hyderabad, during 6-7 March 2025. The training was sponsored by ICAR-All India Network Project on Challenging and Emerging Diseases of Animals (AINP-CEDA) and aimed at enhancing the skills of Scheduled Caste (SC) professionals working in ICAR Institutes, Agricultural Universities, and Colleges. A total of 11 participants from three states attended the programme. The training covered important topics such as the current status of virus-induced tumors in poultry, pathogenesis and diagnosis of Marek’s Disease (MD), Avian Leucosis Virus (ALV), and Reticuloendotheliosis Virus (REV). The participants also received training on the molecular detection and differentiation of MDV (pathotypes), ALV (subgroups), and REV, along with strategies to control these viral diseases. The programme was led by Dr. M. R. Reddy, Principal Scientist, as the Course Director, with Dr. T. R. Kannaki, Principal Scientist, and Dr. Vijay Kumar, Senior Scientist, serving as Course Coordinators. The participants appreciated the valuable insights and practical knowledge gained during the training.

The ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research (ICAR-DPR), Hyderabad, celebrated its 38th Foundation Day with great enthusiasm today.
Dr. R.P. Sharma, Former Director, ICAR-DPR, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. In his address, he extended his congratulations and highlighted the institute’s rich history and significant contributions to the development of rural chicken varieties. He emphasized the importance of strengthening farmer training programs and ensuring the practical application of research to enhance rural livelihoods and nutritional security.
Presiding over the event, Dr. R.N. Chatterjee, Director, ICAR-DPR, reaffirmed the institute’s crucial role in advancing the poultry sector. He outlined its contributions to germplasm development for rural backyard poultry farming, the development of location-specific chicken varieties under AICRP and advancements in nutrition and health technologies. He also highlighted the recent introduction of academic programs at the directorate, with the admission of MVSc and PhD students in Poultry Science under the ICAR-IVRI Hub, Hyderabad. Additionally, he presented a roadmap for the future vision of the directorate. Dr. M.V.L.N. Raju, Principal Scientist, welcomed the dignitaries, while Dr. U. Rajkumar, Head of the Division of PG&B, delivered a presentation showcasing the directorate’s key achievements. Staff members and students actively participated in the celebrations. Earlier, the Chief Guest visited the display unit and appreciated the efforts of the institute. The program concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr. B. Prakash, Organizing Secretary.

National Science Day was celebrated with great fervour at ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research, Hyderabad on 28th February 2025. The event commenced with the online address by Dr. Himanshu Pathak, Secretary, DARE and DG, ICAR. Thereafter, Dr. S.S. Paul, Head, Poultry Nutrition, Health and Physiology, ICAR-DPR, presented glimpses on the life and achievements of Dr. C.V. Raman, the renowned Nobel laureate. Dr. R.N. Chatterjee, Director, highlighted the significant contributions of Indian scientists across different fields and shed light on the recent achievements and innovations in Indian science. He further emphasized on bringing inclusivity and promoting resilience through scientific endeavors and laid stress on the importance of sharing scientific knowledge for the benefit of global masses. The meeting was attended by the staff and students of the institute.

Golden Jubilee Celebrations of All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Poultry Breeding was held on 13th February 2025 at ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research (ICAR-DPR), Hyderabad. The event marked the 50 years of dedicated efforts directed towards genetic improvement in poultry breeding and development of rural chicken varieties, with a focus on fostering self-reliance in the backyard poultry sector. It has also significantly contributed towards improving rural livelihoods and enhancing nutritional security in the country.
Dr. R. N. Chatterjee, Director, ICAR-DPR, welcomed the dignitaries and provided an overview of the history of AICRP on Poultry Breeding, highlighting its achievements in developing and improving elite layer and broiler lines, creating location-specific rural chicken varieties, and characterizing and conserving indigenous chicken breeds.
Dr. Raghavendra Bhatta, Deputy Director General (Animal Science), ICAR, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and congratulated the staff of AICRP on Poultry Breeding for their relentless efforts in advancing poultry research and development. He emphasized the project’s role in enhancing the productivity of rural chicken varieties, benefitting farmers across India.
Dr. G. K. Gaur, Assistant Director General (Animal Production and Breeding), ICAR and Dr. S. B. Barbuddhe, Director, ICAR-NMRI, Hyderabad graced the function as Guests of honour. The event was attended by several eminent dignitaries, including Dr. R. P. Sharma, Former Director, ICAR-DPR; Dr. H. K. Narula, Principal Scientist, ICAR and former in charges of centres.
On this occasion, two chicken varieties, Janapriya, a dual-purpose rural chicken variety, and Aslibro, an alternative variety for native chicken farming, were released by Dr. Raghavendra Bhatta, Deputy Director General (Animal Science).
Dr. U. Rajkumar, In charge AICRP on Poultry Breeding, presented the glimpses of history, achievements of AICRP and its contribution to the development of poultry sector in the country.
Farmers from Karnataka, Bihar, and Nagaland shared their feedback on the benefits of the chicken germplasm received from AICRP centres, highlighting its positive impact on backyard poultry farming in their regions.
Principal Investigators (PIs) of various AICRP Centres, former PIs, farmers, officials from PVNRTVU and State Animal Husbandry departments, staff members, and students actively participated in the celebrations, making the event a grand success.

A short-term training program on “Applied Poultry Biotechnology: Bridging Theory and Practice” was organized at ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research from 3-7 February 2025. The program was organized for Scheduled caste participants sponsored under the SCSP component of the ICAR-Network Project on Genome Editing Technology for improvement in livestock health and production. Ten participants belonging to five state veterinary colleges and Universities attended the training. Both theory and practical including hands-on training were imparted to the participants in the areas of Nucleic acid isolation, PCR, RT-PCR, characterization of protein, bioinformatics tools, GWAS, NGS, transcriptomics, transgenesis, and genome editing in chicken. Dr.R.N. Chatterjee, Director, appreciated the participants’ interest in learning new insights into Biotechnology and encouraged them to apply for extramural research grants to fund their research. The training program was organized by the Course Directors, Dr. K.S. Rajaravindra, Senior Scientist and Dr. L. Leslie Leo Prince, Principal Scientist of this Directorate.

The ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research (ICAR-DPR) is actively implementing the DAPSC programme across various villages in Tamil Nadu. As part of this initiative, on January 29, 2025, a team of scientists from the Directorate visited Pazhayanur village (Maduranthakam block) and Villipakkam village (Chittamur block) in Chengalpattu district, identifying 50 Scheduled Caste (SC) families in each village as beneficiaries. Similarly, on January 30, 2025, the team visited Keezaparuthikudi village (Komaratchi block) in Cuddalore district and selected 100 SC families under the scheme.
During the visits, beneficiaries were introduced to the DAPSC scheme of ICAR-DPR and the organization’s contributions to the development of improved backyard chicken varieties such as Vanaraja, Gramapriya, Srinidhi, etc. Scientific knowledge on backyard poultry rearing, brooding management, nutrition, and health care was shared to the beneficiaries. The adverse effects of protein and micronutrient deficiencies on the health, emphasizing the importance of consuming eggs and meat to enhance nutritional status and boost immunity were explained.
To ensure the safety of poultry from predators and harsh weather conditions, 200 night shelters were distributed to the identified families across the three villages. Dr. A. Kannan, Principle Scientist attended the programme in the villages of Chengalpattu district. Dr. M. Shanmugam, Principle Scientist coordinated the programme. The programme was attended by Panchayat representatives and office bearers of the three villages.
